Is your good preventing you from being GREAT?

Last week end I watched an inspirational film about Roger Bannister, the man who first broke the 4-minute mile.

Bannister had developed his own training programme, that got him close to the goal of sub 4 minutes and not quite there. He was keen that his running programme did not interfere with his responsibilities as a medic. He ran fast and had not considered that he could be the first to break the 4 minutes, until a chum suggested it. There was competition between 4 athletes in four countries who wanted to achieve the unachievable Banister continued to follow his own programme and became very close. One key “race” was disqualified as it was not considered to be a true race because the other competitors were pacers.

His own strategy was good yet not good enough.

And then…..

He recruited a coach, within six-months he had achieved his goal.

History was made. The four-minute mile had been achieved, 3:59.4, 6th May 1954 on the Iffley road track, Oxford

Interesting, Bannister only increased his speed and smashed the time barrier only after he recruited his coach who encouraged him to use a different, more successful approach.
