What impact will the Samira Ahmed / BBC ruling have on your practice?

What impact will the Samira Ahmed / BBC ruling have on your practice?

Last week the high court found in favour of Samira Ahmed and against the BBC, supporting her claim that her salary was lower because of her gender.

In the world of dentistry, I see many messages on Facebook and other online forums asking colleagues how much they should pay their team members. In the absence of much more information, this is tout amount to plucking a figure out of thin air and risking a claim of unfair pay.

Pay claims are costly, time consuming and incredibly stressful.

Can you afford to take that risk?

Can you justify why you pay your team members the amount you do and if there is a difference why it exits?

In dental practice I believe greatest risk of unfair pay is in two areas
  • Between receptionists and nurses
  • Between junior and senior team members doing the same/ similar duties.
I have long been a fan of and encouraged the use of a points based salary system.

A points based pay structure ensure salaries that are clear, transparent and beyond any allegations of unfairness.

Benefits of points-based salary structure
  • clear transparent, fair.
  • Simple and easy to operate.
  • Team members feel rewarded when they have extra skills and duties
  • Encourages loyalty
  • Helps with budgeting pay increases
  • Provides career progression
