Goal setting- The habit of successful people.

Goal setting is a habit of successful people.

Now we are mid way through January those you who made New Year’s resolutions have probably broken them already. One of the many reason for this is January 1st we make resolutions and set goals, that we think we must or should do. Most the time these ideas are ill conceived and occasionally misplaced.

Now that we are settling in to 2011, it is a great time to reflect, review and set realist goals for the year.

Over the next few blogs, I will share with you some gems that will enable you set realistic goals that will become a reality

Preparation

Find a place where you can be quiet comfortable, and undisturbed for at least one hour.

Have plenty of paper and pens ideally coloured and a spacious writing space.

Lubricate your mind; drink plenty of water.

Reflection Questions

As you read these questions, don’t think about the answers, just write immediately what comes to mind.

· What were my greatest accomplishments in last year?

· What were my greatest disappointments?

· What do I dream of achieving this year?

· What do I want more of this year?

· What do I need to learn?

· What must stay in last year?

It is also quite an interesting exercise to write the answers twice once with your dominant hand and once with your non dominant hand, and as you do notice how the answers change.

When setting your goals, it is easier to set the long-term goals first, three, five or ten year goals first. Once you have the outline of where you dream of being in the future, and then start to set your annual and quarterly goals, which will become your action, plans.

When setting goals ensure they are balanced, paying attention to your physical, social, intellectual, emotional and spiritual self.

In the next post we will look at how the words we use are key to the success or failure of our resolutions.
