what is your money mind set?

Do you know what your money mind-set is?

What is your money mind-set?

Your money mind-set is your attitude to money at an unconscious level, and because your money mind-set is at an unconscious level you may find yourself fighting and striving to change your financial situation and never seeming to win the battle.

I would like to share with you five different money mind-sets and how they are manifested. You can choose to recognise which mind-set(s) most accurately describes you. Having identified your mind-sets ask yourself does the unconscious way I think about money serve me well, yes or no?

If your money mind-set is serving you well and you are getting the results you want congratulations, and if like most people you recognise that you are not getting what you want in relation to your finances you can choose to change your money mind-set.

So what are the five money mind-sets?

·        Spender
·        Saver
·        Avoider
·        Yogi
·        Hero

·        The Spender

The Spender, does just that spends money and has a fantastic time doing it. Shopping is a hobby for the Spender. You can recognise the Spender and 100 paces they always have something new, their gadgets are the latest, they are generally the life and soul of the party and always up for a good time and an adventure, and if you're out for dinner a Spender will want to pay the whole bill. Behind the scenes the Spender is shackled by debt, the life exists on credit and they rob Peter to pay Paul. The motto of the Spender is “I could be knocked down by a bus tomorrow I'm going to live today.”

·        The Saver

The Saver is true to his name, he saves every single penny, because “If you take care of the pennies the pounds will take care of themselves.” The Saver cannot understand anyone who would go shopping for fun, for them you only spend money when you absolutely have to. The Saver will find an excuse as to why they can't join in the party and if you are going out for dinner a Saver will only want to pay for their share. A saver’s life is often austere and lacks fun. These saver’s motto is “I must be prepared for
tomorrow.”

·        Avoider

The avoider is like an ostrich with his head in the sand and has absolutely no idea what state is finances are in. The avoider will leave their bank statements unopened and hope for the best. Their spending habits bundled as extreme as the Saver or Spender yet they are ignorant of their financial situation. If out for dinner the avoider won't know in advance whether the card will be processed or not. The avoider’s motto is “It will all be okay in the long run.”

·        Yogi

The Yogi has a spiritual disdain for money and thinks that they are somehow above the need of it. The Yogi will have enough to get by and no more. There may be times in Yogi's life where there are abundant finances and they will find ways and deserving causes to distribute it to. If you are out for dinner with the Yogi they may expect you to pay for them. The Yogi’s motto, “money is the root of all evil.”

·        Hero

The hero is the only one of our mind-sets that is really constructive and fulfilling in both the short and long-term in respect to money. A hero has usually learnt the hard way and developed a hero mind-set to money because they have previously suffered the consequences and misfortunes of one or more of the previous mind-sets. A hero knows when it is appropriate to spend, to save and to give to charity because they look at and understand the financial position and make decisions based on the facts. When out for dinner with a hero they will probably want to split the bill equally and will be able to do that confidently because the people that they are dining with are equally responsible with money and can be sure that there won't be any inappropriate bills because one or two people chose the most expensive items on the menu just because somebody else will be paying. The superhero's motto “You reap what you sow”

So which money mind-set(s) do you most closely resemble? And are your current patterns serving you well? If you've answered no and realise that you are actually a Spender, Saver, avoider, Yogi or a combination of two or more and you would really like to be a hero, you can. The great news is your future does not have to equal your past and you can change the unconscious patterns that determine your behaviours.
