Do you sound like a parrot?


On my travels around the country, I meet with hundreds of dentists who rand from being mildly irritated, to frustrated or even incensed by their team member, why?
I am told  variations on the same theme.

·        “I asked my Practice manager to do the CQC paperwork, and she didn’t do it and now I have to do it myself, when am i going to find the time to do it?”

·        “I asked my nurse to order me some impression material and she ordered completely the wrong stuff, and now I have to send it back and I had to send the patient away because I didn’t have what I needed, what a waste of time and money!.”

·        “I asked my book keeper to manage my accounts and they have done it all wrong and now my accounts are going to be late and I have to pay someone else to do it all over again, more money down the drain.”

·        “I asked my nurses to tidy the stock room, they have done it all wrong and now I can’t find anything, do i have to do everything for myself?”

“ Every staff meeting I have to tell the staff the same thing over and over again, nothing every changes, why can’t they just listen, I sound like a winging parrot?”

Do you know your healthy numbers?



If you were to see a patient for the first time or for a routine examination, you would most likely do a Basic Periodontal Examination (BPE), wouldn't you?

If one of your patients were taken in to hospital and kept in, the nursing staff would monitor their vital signs such as blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature on a regular basis, wouldn't they?

Why do we do this?

That's right, we do it because it enable us to;

  • Have a base line measurement of how severe the disease is,
  • Help plan appropriate treatment
  • Qualitively measure improvements
  • Help us get and keep our patients healthy.
When you are planning treatment for your patients you go through several steps;
  • Diagnosis of the problem(s)
  • Elimination and stabilisation of disease
  • Restoration of function and aesthetics
  • Maintenance
If your practice were a patient, would you know how sick or healthy it was?
What vital signs are you measuring on a regular basis?

Have you ever had a heath issue such as being over weight, unfit, diabetic, toothache or RSI etc, that you knew needs attention? If so did you actively do something about it as soon as you knew there was a problem, or did you wait until you couldn't ignore it any longer?

Have you, or someone else you know, ever had a situation where you thought you were fit and healthy only to discover as a bolt out of the blue that there were serious health issues? Hopefully this is picked up on a routine screening rather than a fatal  cardiac collapse.
