Business coaching from a cycle ride - Part 1

As many of you know I have just completed a cycle ride from Oxford to Putney bridge, leaving Oxford mid morning on Sunday and reaching Putney bridge at 10:00am on Tuesday.
As I was progressing on my journey I became aware how like running a successful business my bike ride was.
Over the next few blogs I invite you to find out how my cycle trip can help you improve your business.
This trip started by my friend, Clare, asking me “Where are we going to cycle this September, it seems to have become a tradition?” Last year we cycled the Pembrokeshire coast and the year before that Galway.
Clare and I started considering and answering some basic questions
· What was essential in our trip?
It had to be done before the end of the second week of September as Clare had to go back to college and could not take leave after that.
I had to be back to run my tele-seminar on Tuesday 7th at 19:00.
I had to be able to attend a friend’s wedding Saturday 4th.
We had to be able to visit places of interest along the way.
Cost less than £200
· What was important?
Time was limited so to maximise the cycling, reaching start and end destinations had to be less than 1 hour by car.
Ideally had to be close to water
Had to include a variety of landscapes
Quality of the accommodation
The number of miles we would need to cycle each day
Proximity of delightful places to eat and drink
· What was the value of the trip?
Being outside and being active
· What was the purpose?
To have fun
Enjoy being outside
Share the company of great friends
By being clear at the start, it was so much easier to achieve the cycle ride that we wanted to do.
We cycled Oxford to Putney, I was back for my tele-seminar, Clare was able to take her leave. The trip cost £90 each including really comfortable, and clean accommodation and meals that were all on route. We visited Eton, Windsor great park, Hampton Court, ate several meals overlooking the Thames. The journey was broken in to acceptable portions so the journey was enjoyable 50, miles, 30 miles and 20 miles.
Whatever you are just about to start I invite you to consider the following questions.
- · What is essential?
- · What is important?
- · What is the value
- · What is the purpose?
You can ask these questions and gain insight whatever you are embarking on to ensure it is successful, this could include
- · A treatment plan
- · Recruiting a new member of staff
- · A marketing campaign
- · A holiday
- · A new relationship
- · Working with a new dental business coach
Whatever context you use these question be sure to let me know the value in using them.
This stopped me in my tracks
I received a testimonial this morning that stopped me in my tracks. Thank you Cormac for your kind words of acknowledgement and appreciation, it is great to know that I am making a difference.
TESTIMONIAL FOR JANE LELEAN OF HEALTHY & WEALTHY
"When Jane became my business coach I was looking for help in improving my leadership skills in my dental practice. Over the past nine months we have gone on to look at other areas such as time management, selling skills, marketing, compelling vision, communication and business skills. Jane’s combination of dental background and coaching skills have been invaluable to me and given me renewed energy and enthusiasm to take my practice to a higher level. Her own enthusiasm and positivity are infectious and her passion for dentistry is very evident.
Jane recently gave a two day course in our practice on “Selling – it’s a team game” which was a real eye opener for us. The very next morning, by asking one patient the right question while I waited for her local to work , I “sold” her a treatment plan for TMJ assessment, ortho and whitening that will recoup 75% of the cost of Jane’s course. Instant result!"

The five laws of stratospheric success - Part 5

In their amazing book ‘The Go Giver' , Bob Burg and John David Mann share their five laws of stratospheric success
5. The law of reciprocity
The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving
In the book, the central character is asked to take action toward each of the five laws within 24 hours of being introduced to them.
Dentists are truly generous; I have not yet met one that does not want to do the best for their patients.
As a member of a caring profession you are giving all the time, your time, how many of you are working through lunch hours, before hours, after work and weekends, just to make sure that the patient, is served week. You may be doing emergency appointments to get them out of pain, working extra hours to make sure their work is fitted before a wedding or special party.
Most of you that I know are also generous and giving to your staff, in time and energy to listen to and help them overcome their personal challenges, financially in terms of their salaries, gifts and practice social events.
When a person is always giving they eventually become depleted and again I often meet depleted dentists, they are tired, worn out and lost their passion for dentistry, their practices and life. At this point you may become resentful of what you are giving and feel like those around you are always taking from you, demanding your time, attention, and money, taking liberties and making unrealistic expectations about what you can do for them.
Many of you will have coffee or water dispensers in your waiting rooms, and like you if they are continually dispensing they will eventually dry out, they need to be replenished and so do you.
Your body, mind and soul are replenished by receiving as well as giving.
If you recognise that you are giving much more than you are receiving it is time to address the balance, and be open to receiving.
When one of your patients pays you a compliment for example “those veneers that you fitted look really beautiful” graciously accept the compliment “Thank you for noticing that I do an excellent job”
As a dentist or member of a dental team you give so much of yourself, take time to enjoy being looked after by someone else, book yourself a massage, or other ‘hands on’ therapy and give yourself over to being cared for by another person.
One of the things that I notice about giving and receiving is that when our gifts are graciously received and thanks is given we are likely to receive more. I have two sets of nieces and nephews one set always acknowledge my gifts, ring me and write to me and say thank you. The other set don’t acknowledge that gifts have even been received. Even though I endeavour to be fair it is much more pleasurable for me to give to those nieces and nephews that say thank you and if I am honest I probably give them more of my time and attention too.
The gift of “Thank you” will help you stay open to receiving and keeping you replenished in mind, body, soul and even financially too.
I invite you just for today and one day at a time to be really open to receive..

The five laws of stratospheric success - Part 4

In their amazing book ‘The Go Giver' , Bob Burg and John David Mann share their five laws of stratospheric success
4. The law of authenticity
The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself
In the book, the central character is asked to take action toward each of the five laws within 24 hours of being introduced to them.
People spend time with people they know like and trust.
Your patients come to you because they know like and trust you. We are all highly skilled at sniffing out a fake, and your patients can tell if you are not being authenic at 100 paces.
And yet many of us spend our time trying to be like someone else and over time you end up not knowing who you are and more importantly nor do those people around you.
I met a couple this weekend and he told me how much he wanted to climb mount Kilamanjaro, it saddened me to here that his wife was determined not to let him do it, and so he was denying who he was, part of him was dying.
I was also curious to read about Sam Walton, the founder of Walmat which now turns over $405bn and makes a profit of $13bn each year!
Apparently, on his deathbed Sam reported last three words were “I blew it!”. He realized that what truly mattered to him was his kids and his wife, whom he’d neglected in favour of building his business empire. Because his attention had been solely focused on developing Wal-mart, he didn’t take the time appreciate what was truly important to him and for him when he had the chance. San was not being authentic in terms of how hi lived his life in relation to his familty and died regretting the choices he made.
You only have one life, make th most of it.
I invite you just for today and one day at a time truly be yourself, not the person you believe others want you to be.

The five laws of stratospheric success - Part 3
In their amazing book ‘The Go Giver' , Bob Burg and John David Mann share their five laws of stratospheric success
2. The law of influence
Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people’s interests first
In the book, the central character is asked to take action toward each of the five laws within 24 hours of being introduced to them.
I am curious to know what do you do already and what more can you do to put your other people’s interests first? Other people this maybe family, friends, patients, colleagues or complete strangers anyone.
What can you do today to put someone else’s needs above your own?
I remember Mike Wise once told me about when he first set up his practice, there he was with a gorgeous surgery on Wimpole Street with outgoings that I don’t really want to think about. He opened his doors for business, and in walked his first patient, who needed a root canal treatment (RCT). Mike had already decided that even though he a is one of the finest clinicians in the UK his patients were best served by having their RCT done by a specialist endodontist.
What a dilemma Mike had a source of income to pay the bills if he did the treatment versus the belief that his patient would be best served by referring them out.
Mike put his patient’s interests first and referred the patient out.
What would you have done?
I have been following a thread on one of the dental forums about opening hours for dental practices, and shocked to realise how many practices follow the convention of 9.00 am. – 5.00 pm and closed for lunch between 1.00 and 2.00.
What could be some of the amazing possibilities and opportunities that open up to you and for you if you considered what your patient’s interests were when deciding on your opening hours?
And finally to strangers what are some of the ways in which your life could be enriched by putting other people first, whether it be by letting another driver out of a junction first, or buying a sandwich for a vagrant?
I invite you to try it and see for yourself, put someone else's interest ahead of yours.
“When all is said and done a lot more is said then done”
Make a difference take action on the law of influence and let me know what happens as a result. Comment here
