Are you dreaming about leaving the sink job and evolving into a principal?

Are you dreaming about leaving the sink job  and evolving into a principal?

According to data from Startup Genome, the failure rate for start-ups in the UK is around 60%, which is similar to, the global average. I acknowledge that dental practices don’t go under at this rate, however behind the surgery doors in a squat practice or a new purchase, there is usually a business that is functioning well below par and a principal who is looking for the solutions that will evolve their dental baby into a successful practice that provides rewards for them and their team.

Being  principal is very different from working as an associate, it takes a very different mindset and different behaviours.

Many associates want to become principals and unfortunately, they are seldom prepared for what is needed to be a successful principal, and it comes as a shock to discover the difference.

As a principal you must have

  • Specific values, beliefs ,and attitudes.
  • Certain patterns of thought and mental agility.
  • Soft skills, emotional intelligence, interpersonal communication, empathy, networking, and motivation.
  • Business skills, finance, people management, marketing, sales; time management; Understanding of compliance, taxation, and the law.
  • Problem solving.
  • Sufficient clinical knowledge and expertise.
  • Willingness to do whatever needs to be done.

Are you considering the transition from associate to principal?

Rank yourself out of 5 on each of these questions.

  • Can I work for long periods on my own?
  • Do I need to jump in and just do it?
  • Do I think strategically enough to make good decisions about how I append my time, money, and energy?
  • How good am I at negotiating, inspiring and motivating others?
  • Do I finish what I start?
  • Am I a good problem solver?
  • Am I willing to learn about myself, invite and embrace feedback?
  • Do I love learning, learn quickly, and put into practice what I discover?
  • Is being a principal so important that I am prepared to do everything that it takes to succeed?

The great news is that all these skills can be learned and mastered so you can establish your perfect practice, the practice that is everything that your current unhappy job is not.
