What impact will the Samira Ahmed / BBC ruling have on your practice?

What impact will the Samira Ahmed / BBC ruling have on your practice?

Last week the high court found in favour of Samira Ahmed and against the BBC, supporting her claim that her salary was lower because of her gender.

In the world of dentistry, I see many messages on Facebook and other online forums asking colleagues how much they should pay their team members. In the absence of much more information, this is tout amount to plucking a figure out of thin air and risking a claim of unfair pay.

Pay claims are costly, time consuming and incredibly stressful.

Can you afford to take that risk?

Can you justify why you pay your team members the amount you do and if there is a difference why it exits?

In dental practice I believe greatest risk of unfair pay is in two areas
  • Between receptionists and nurses
  • Between junior and senior team members doing the same/ similar duties.
I have long been a fan of and encouraged the use of a points based salary system.

A points based pay structure ensure salaries that are clear, transparent and beyond any allegations of unfairness.

Benefits of points-based salary structure
  • clear transparent, fair.
  • Simple and easy to operate.
  • Team members feel rewarded when they have extra skills and duties
  • Encourages loyalty
  • Helps with budgeting pay increases
  • Provides career progression
If you would like to discuss fair pay structures in your practice call me and I will give you the help that you want. 07989 757 884 or e mail Jane@IODB.co.uk

Do you feel as if you are on the hamster wheel?

Image

Do you feel as if you are on the hamster wheel?
have you ever wondered why dentists, and practice owners choose to work with a coach?

Because know if nothing changes, nothing changes.
They are fed up and want to make a change.
Image

There is no denying dentistry and practice ownership is stressful.
There is always so much to do and so little time to achieve it. The skills needed for practice ownership or being a successful self-employed dentist are not taught at dental school.
Principals, despite having a practice manager, often find themselves ill equipped to deal with leadership and management issues, building and managing a team, defining and establishing values and practice culture, manging finances, complaints etc.
It is often described as being on the hamster wheel, going round and round dealing with the same stuff, at a faster and faster pace and nothing changes, the exhaustion and stress levels increase.
Now is the time to get off the wheel and get a coach.

There are three reasons people, like you, come to coaching
  • Success
  • Fulfilment
  • Legacy

Success this is the tangible outcome, more income, more profit, more time off, better team, better dentistry, better materials and equipment, etc Success brings with it the trinkets and toys that many dentists are striving for holidays, houses, cars, awards, fame etc

Fulfilment. This is less tangible; many clients don’t notice that they had a lack of fulfilment until they work with a coach and start to experiencing the benefits. An increased sense of fulfilment is a positive by product of working with a coach. Clients report that the process helps them become better dentists,  better leaders, better partners, better parents, better friends, a ripple effect is created across all areas of their personal and professional lives.

Legacy the ability to leave something lasting behind. This could be something small for their family, friends or business or larger for their local or global community.

One of the many reasons why the process of coaching is powerful is because it gives you an oasis to stop and think. The opportunity to
  • Think strategically
  • Think about the impact your choices or lack of choices are having
  • Think about the affect your actions or inaction are having on yourself and those you care for.
  • Think about better options
In the next decade for you to be a successful dentist and practice owner it is essential that you are
  • Aware
  • Adaptable
  • Agile
Coaching will enable you to do this. For more information call 07989 757 884.

The eight sections in the wheel above represent Balance in your life overall.  Seeing the centre of the wheel as 0 and the outer edge of the wheel as 10, rank your level of satisfaction with each area of your life by drawing a straight or curved line (see example below).

Image
The new perimeter of the circle represents your life as it is at present.  How bumpy would the ride be if this were a real wheel?

How satisfied are you with your balance wheel?
Are the scores too low,
Are the scores too inconsistent,
Are there one or two areas that are having a negative impact n the others?

Now is the perfect time to make the changes you want.

We are here to support you.

October tips to Transform your practice

Welcome to our regular newsletter, which will be filled with simple easy to implement, tips and tools to enable you to make your good practice great.

I have recently been working with a group of young dentists who were very unhappy with their post FD associate positions. The dissatisfaction included a number of issues including UDA rates and targets, lack of support from support staff, pressure to work through every lunch break or 10-hour days with only a 15-minute break, etc, etc.

Working with these clients 1-2-1 we have helped them
  • Get clear about their values and ethics,
  • Identify the practice culture they want to work in
  • Plan their career path
  • Work effectively without putting their well-being at risk
Consequently, all the dentists concerned have found new positions in which they are more confident, happy doing the treatment they find fulfilling and earning more money.
If you would like to know more about the coaching and mentoring support we offer to dentists at all stages of their careers, on a individual or group basis, e mail Jane@IODB.co.uk or call us on 07989 757884

Gems from our communication, confidence and Patient Centred Sales workshop
BEST CHOICES

BEST CHOICESis a mnemonic and a framework that will enable you and your team to have more inciteful and profitable conversations with your patients. Conversations that build connection, reduce complaints, litigation and stress;  increase understanding, trust and high value treatment plan conversions

You can make your treatments FABby always naming a FACT, followed by an ADVANTAGEand then finally a BENEFIT.E.g. composites are tooth coloured, so they blend with the remaining tooth, which means that they will be invisible and will give you back your confident smile

If you want to increase your private work, be more confident discussing treatment plan and increase your income Patient Centred Sales BEST CHOICES will enable you to do it.

"In the two weeks since I did BEST CHOICES, I have generated extra £30,000 and I didn't feel like I was selling. Thank you."
Dr O.L. .Principal Dentist Hertfordshire

“It has also resulted in my income from private treatment increasing, some months by four times.”
L.S. Young dentist

Ideas to help young dentists thrive

In my experience young dentists are passionate, enthusiastic and committed to becoming the best they can be. They often want to run before they can walk.
Many sources say mastery takes 10,000 hours of practice which is usually about 10 years.
I have recently been chatting to several young dentists who are thinking about giving up because they are intimidated by the work posted on social media by dentists who have many more years’ experience than them.
My top tips to young dentists turn off the social media, stop looking at and obsessing at other peoples work. Get a camera and take standardised photos of all your work, and then reflect on each case. What was its BLT?
What did you do that was brilliant, what was lacking, and what will you do next time to transform your results?
Find a supportive mentor group to discuss cases and gold standard protocols.
Master your soft and communication skills this will do more to reduce litigation than another clinical course.

Our delgates always comment about how delicious, attractive and healthy the food is at our workshops. it is all home cooked and much home grown, we will share some of our recipes with you to try at home.

Sun-dried Tomato, Mushroom, and Spinach Tofu Quiche

For the crust:
  • 1 tablespoon ground flax + 3 tablespoons water, mixed together
  • 1 cup whole almonds, ground into flour
  • 1 cup gluten-free rolled oats, ground into flour
  • 1 teaspoon dried parsley
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp coconut oil or olive oil
  • 1-2.5 tbsp water, as needed
For the quiche:
  • 1 block (14-oz) firm tofu
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil or olive oil
  • 1 leek or yellow onion, thinly sliced
  • 3 large garlic cloves, minced
  • 3 cups (8-oz) sliced mushrooms
  • 1/2 cup fresh chives, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, finely chopped
  • 1/3 cup oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes, finely chopped
  • 1 cup baby spinach
  • 2 tbsp nutritional yeast
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 3/4-1 teaspoon fine grain sea salt
  • Black pepper, to taste
  • Red pepper flakes, to taste

Directions:
  1. Preheat oven to 350F and lightly grease a round 10-inch tart pan.
  2. Drain the  tofu.
  3. For the crust: Whisk together flax and water mixture in a small bowl and set aside so it can gel up.
  4. In a large bowl, stir together the almond meal, oat flour, parsley, oregano, and salt.
  5. Add in the flax mixture and oil. Stir until mostly combined, adding the remaining water until the dough is sticky (about the consistency of cookie dough). The dough should stick together when you press it between your fingers.
  6. Crumble the dough evenly over the base of the tart pan (or pie dish). Starting from the centre of the pan, press the mixture evenly into the pan, working your way outward and up the sides of the pan. Poke a few fork holes in the dough so air can escape.
  7. Bake the crust at 350F for 13-16 minutes, or until lightly golden and firm to touch. Set aside to cool while you finish preparing the filling. Increase oven temperature to 375F.
  8. For the filling: Process the tofu  in a food processor until smooth and creamy. If it doesn't get creamy, add a tiny splash of almond milk to help it along.
  9. In a skillet, add oil and saute the leek (or onion) and garlic over medium heat for a few minutes. Stir in the mushrooms, season with salt, and cook on medium-high heat until most of the water cooks off the mushrooms, about 10-12 minutes. Stir in the herbs, sun-dried tomatoes, spinach, nutritional yeast, oregano, salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes until combined. Cook until the spinach is wilted.
  10. Finally, remove from heat and stir in the processed tofu until thoroughly combined. Adjust seasoning to taste if desired. Spoon mixture into baked crust and smooth out with a spoon until even.
  11. Bake quiche, uncovered, at 375F for 33-37 minutes, until the quiche is firm to the touch. For best results, cool the quiche for 15-20 minutes on a cooling rack before attempting to slice. The crust may crumble slightly when sliced warm, but not to worry.
Wrap up leftovers and refrigerate for 3-4 days. Leftover quiche can be reheated in the oven on a baking sheet for about 15-20 minutes at 350F
