I was at the hairdressers the other day and he started talking to me about his hero product, and he suggested that business should have one.

What is a hero product?
A hero product is a product or service that almost without exception of your patients and clients, dormant, active or prospective will benefit from.

The hairdresser his hero product is Aveda brilliant damage control, http://www.aveda.co.uk/product/5321/16911/Hair-Care/Styling/Brilliant-Damage-Control/index.tmpl

My Hairdresser explained to me that whatever your hair type, long, short, curly or straight, this product will improve the condition and appearance of your hair. He says “Everyone should use this”. I have spoken to 3 other hairdressers and they all agree. It obviously really is a hero product.

My hero product is my one year coaching and training, the flagship the Institute of Dental Business. This program will improve your business skills and performance of your practice whether you have recently bought or are planning to open a new practice, have been in practice for many years and want to re-energise what you have or if you're at the end of your career preparing to sell. Moreover this program is designed to suit the needs of all members of the team from principals and practice managers, through hygienists, therapists and dentists to dental nurses, receptionists and treatment coordinators.

I believe in my hero product so much that I will provide a 100% moneyback guarantee.

What are your hero products?

What product or service you offers real and lasting benefit to patients?

One of the things I recognise about the hairdresser’s hero product is that as soon as clients experience the benefits they will buy it time and time and time again.

So having identified your hero product can you do to maximise the income you receive from it?

If you would like to know more about my hero product the Institute of dental business visit http://www.theinstituteofdentalbusiness.co.uk/courses.php  or call me on o 079897 57884

What gets puts a fire in my heart - the WHY of my business

I was at a business wealth club meeting today with many business owners from Oxford and surrounding areas, http://www.thebusinesswealthclub.com/, and we were discussing the importance of having a clear and compelling WHY we run our businesses.

But then realised that this morning was probably the first time I had expressed why I am so passionate about my coaching business and my motivation to get up every morning, the see clients, plan new workshops and develop my business.

I thought I would share my why with you.

When I was 19 one Sunday afternoon in September my father drove me to London, to my halls of residence and to the beginning of my life at university. The following Sunday I was viewing his body in the chapel of rest, not knowing anything of his illness in the intervening week. That same day my mother threw me out of the house and told me that I was welcome any longer. Just before the end of the Christmas term I realised that what my mother had said was not just a reaction to the death of her husband, but she meant that I was never welcome back home. Just before my end of term exams I discovered that I was homeless and had to move out of my halls of residence. I was alone and felt like I had no one to support me. My years at university would probably the worst five years of my life, as I look back at that time I don't recognise the person I was. I'm not proud of many things I did all the person I became. During college I worked hard and played even harder, and at the end of five years at an astronomical amount of debt.

Within a few years of qualifying I brought my own practice and life became much better.  Then I discovered my manager was embezzling very large amounts of money. I discovered practice was technically insolvent. I had many staff who were dependent on me for their income, and I felt a massive responsibility to them and my patients. I was single with no family to fall back on, the only thing I had to get me through with my resourcefulness. Once again I was alone, didn't know what to do, didn't know who to turn to and this time I had a mountain of debt.

I had the realisation that I knew how to deliver great dentistry and yet I knew nothing about how to run a successful business. There was no reason why I should do how to run a dental practice as a successful business, as there was no heritage of self-employment in my family and dental school does not teach business skills.

This period of my life was one of the longest and darkest times and yet the most rewarding. I was lonely, isolated, ignorant, frustrated and felt helpless much of the time. My free time was spent in seminars and reading, learning how to run a successful dental practice. I worked with a coach, and implemented everything that I could. To this day he tells me that what made me different from other clients was that I took action and I got results. The truth was I didn't feel I had any other choice, my practice was failing and I had to blindly trust that my coach and other mentors knew what they were doing, I had no choice. There were times, many times when I doubted myself and was distrustful of those around me. It was bleak.

My ignorance of how to run the business had repercussions in other areas of my life, I was overweight, unfit, drank too much alcohol. I cut myself off from friends and those I did see got the worst of me.

So why do I now work as a business coach and trainer?

In essence I do what I do so nobody else has to go through the ignorance, pain, frustration and loneliness that I went through.

Within a relatively short period of time I transformed a failing business into a profitable rewarding practice the staff felt was like belonging to the family and the patients loved coming in and kept returning.

I transformed the practice because I learnt how to run it as a business that put it patients at its heart and still attended to the other aspects of business. And I can show you how to do it too.

Dental schools still don't teach business skills and I have yet to find many other business owners who have learnt how to run a business before they go into business themselves. Each day I talk to business owners, dental principals and team members tell me they are experiencing some of what I went through when I was ignorant to how to run a successful business and yet I passionately believe that this pain, frustration and isolation that so many business owners experience is entirely preventable.

So that is why I wake up every morning between 5:15 and 6:00 with a spring in my step and a fire in my heart eager to get to work and help fellow dentists business owners and their teams.

If you are someone or know someone who is currently experiencing the pain, frustration and isolation of owning a failing business call me on (01296) 770462 or (07989) 757884, because I can help.

Seasons, dental practices and leadership

Seasons, dental practices and leadership

Just as a year has four distinct seasons, Spring summer autumn and winter, so too does the life cycle of your practice. Similarly, as your wardrobe changes throughout the year to fit the seasonal weather, so to your leadership style will change throughout the life and seasons of your business.

Characteristics of business seasons

The easiest way to tell which sees in your in, is to reflect back ,look at get the sense of where you have just come from.

Summer practices are focused on building your patient base, patients will be coming to you with little perceived effort, and treatment plan conversions will happen effortlessly.

Autumn practices are focused on customer service and ensuring their staff and patients are happy.

Winter practices are mainly focused on building organisation, systems and processes that will prepare them for Spring.

Spring practices are generally introducing new ideas and new concepts and introducing new treatment modalities and techniques.

During the lifetime of your practice will move from season season, as your practice changes , grows and evolves.

Leadership styles have been characterised in many different ways; the one I will share with you now initially was based on the ancient Chinese I Ching and then brought into Western culture by Carl Jung.
Dynamo the task-based leader.
A dynamo leader is focused on driving forward new projects, ideas and changes. A dynamo leader will often railroad through objections ensuring that the project gets completed. To a dynamo leader people, reflection and timing do not come naturally.
If you want to get things moving, and change to happen in your practice you need to be a dynamo leader, and then move onto a new project and appoint a new leader to bring the initial project to fruition and implementation.
In the words of Richard Branson, ”I believe in benevolent dictatorship provided I am the dictator”

Blaze the people-based leader
If you are a blaze leader your primary focus will be on motivating other people to perform at their best, communicate and collaborate and act as a team. A blaze leader will assess what's going on in their team by working alongside them. This style of leadership does not lend itself to your practices that have not yet established themselves or have a reputation. As Jack Welch said, “In leadership you have to exaggerate every statement you make. You've got to repeated thousand times and exaggerate it stop”

Tempo the activity-based leader
Tempo leaders are primarily concerned with consultation. A Tempo leader will continually be comparing themselves, their practice, staff treatment and prices to what is going on in other practices in their locality. Tempo leaders will make sure that things get completed on time however, the plans will lack creativity.

Steel the data based leader
Steel  leaders are focused on calculation. If you are a steal leader, you're in the company of Getty and Rockefeller whom much criticised for their aloof and distant style, leading from the back. If this is your natural leadership style you will learn you think you need to learn about your practice from only looking at the figures.

Whilst we notice each practice principal has a preferred and stronger style of leadership, we also recognise that those leaders that strengthen their weak areas have more rounded and even approach to leadership. In the dental practices, in particular, because they are generally small businesses where you are in very close contact with your team and your patients, in order to deal successfully with the range of circumstances that require a leadership approach, it is most useful if you can approach situations with the most appropriate leadership style, rather than your natural one.

If you would like to learn more about your leadership styles and what you can do to develop them, call me on (07989) 757884 or e-mail Jane@IODB.co.uk

"Any experience can be transformed into something of value."
Vash Young

What was your biggest challenge in practice yesterday?

What did this challenge yesterday teach you that can actually be used to improve your practice?

I often share with my clients the concept that the challenge are a problem in practice is actually a fire. Sometimes the fires in practices are just small and smouldering and others a raging infernos. When I first meet with dental principals and their team members are usually discover that they are spending much of their time dealing with problems and crises and putting out fires every day.

What I encourage my clients to do is to use a two-step process in dealing with these fires.
• Put the fire out
• prevented from ever igniting again.

So in this two-step proce step one; you must solve the immediate problem, that is put the fire out.

Putting the fire out however is not enough because it could reignite another time in the future the next step is the most important one and unfortunately it's the one that generally takes longer and most people don't scheduled the time to do.

Step two devise a system that prevents this fire from ever reigniting again.
In my practice I have a mantra which I shared with my team "I don't mind you make mistakes. What I do mind is you making the same mistake twice.”

So what can you learn from yesterday?

What do you need to do to make sure the circumstances of yesterday never happen again?

Share your experiences and comments using the button below because I really am interested making your good practices great.

How to create a tremendous team

Each month I am posting a short video that links a key strategy to running a really successful dental practice to simple dental anatomy. I have created a simple process by which you can give your practice a “check up” every time you look in a patient’s mouth. This month I am focusing on creating a tremendous team.
